Information update – 4 June 2024

Eighty years ago, on 1 November, 733 Polish children, along with their 102 caregivers, arrived in Wellington aboard the USS General Randall. Their harrowing journey began with their arrest and deportation from Poland by the Russians, continued when they were given refuge in Persia after years of deprivation in labour camps in Siberia and other parts of the Soviet Union, and finshed with their safe arrival in New Zealand. Their journey ended in the quiet country town of Pahiatua, where the camp that had been especially prepared for them, became their first home in New Zealand.

Eighty years later, the children of these children are organising a reunion, not only for the Pahiatua children, but also for their children and subsequent generations. Reunion events will be held in Pahiatua and Wellington. For the events being organised in Pahiatua, we are very privileged to be working with an organising committee, which consists of Tararua District Council staff, museum members, organisers of the

Palmerston North Displaced Persons exhibition, Pahiatua Marae as well as our reunion committee.

Details for this reunion programme are currently being finalised. Events being organised in Pahiatua are being planned over two days.

People have the choice of coming up for the day or staying overnight in or near Pahiatua. We need an indication of what events you are likely to attend so that we can plan accordingly and give an indication of cost. To follow is a Tentative Programme and an Expression of Interest form. This is intended to give notice so that families and friends can plan travel and accommodation for this special event.

Please note the Expression of Interest form is sent to the readers separately, so that it can be printed off and sent by post or electronically.
