Welcome to Our Annual Saint Andrews Party (Andrzejki)!
The Polish Association of Christchurch invites you to join us for one of our most beloved and magical traditions – Andrzejki. Held annually in late November, this celebration is a unique blend of fun, fortune-telling, and folklore, bringing the community together for an unforgettable evening.

A Bit of History
Saint Andrew's Eve, or Andrzejki, has deep roots in Polish culture, traditionally celebrated on the night of November 29th. Originally, it was a night dedicated to young women seeking insight into their romantic futures through fortune-telling rituals. Over time, the tradition evolved, and now Andrzejki is enjoyed by everyone—men, women, and children alike—as a playful night of games and predictions.
The celebration is filled with customs like pouring hot wax through a keyhole into cold water, to reveal shapes that supposedly predict one’s future, and interpreting shadows cast by these shapes. Another fun tradition involves shoes being lined up in a race toward the door—symbolising who might be next to wed. These activities are just part of the charm that makes Andrzejki a magical and enjoyable experience for all ages.
